Kozarac telde voor de oorlog in het voormalige Joegoslavi?Ť ruim 25.000 inwoners. Ongeveer 2000 van hen zijn tijdens de oorlog omgebracht. Het beruchte kamp Omarska heeft naar schatting in slechts 3 maanden 1500 levens gekost. Velen van hen waren inwoners van Kozarac. Het ooit rijke stadje is in mei en juni 1992 - nadat alle overlevenden zijn gedeporteerd – vervolgens geplunderd en in brand gestoken. Ongeveer 90% van de huizen en de infrastructuur (fabrieken, scholen, postkantoor, ziekenhuis, brandweerkazerne, bioscoop, politiebureau, de enige katholieke kerk en alle moskeen) zijn daarbij in rook opgegaan of volledig met de grond gelijk gemaakt.

De oorlog in Bosni?Ť is ge?Ťindigd in december 1995. Bosni?Ťrs keren langzaam aan terug en de wederopbouw is in volle gang. Ook Kozarac wordt opnieuw opgebouwd en sinds 1999 bewoond. Het stadje heeft een rijke geschiedenis en herrijst, ondanks alle oorlogswonden uit de as. Mede met behulp van de investeringen uit het buitenland wordt zowel Bosni?Ť als Kozarac geholpen om op het niveau van 1992 te komen.

Thans zamelt onze stichting donaties ten behoeve van jongerenvereniging ‘Mladost’ (Jeugd) uit Kozarac. Tevens zijn 5-10 bruikbare computers zeer welkom.

Stichting OPTIMISTI 2004
De Stichting “Optimisti 2004” is opgericht op 9 juli 2004 en zet zich in voor de wederopbouw van Kozarac en omringende dropen te Bosni?Ť Hercegovina. Daarnaast wordt de verbetering van leefomstandigheden nagestreefd in de brede zin des woords. De Stichting verwerft fondsen, subsidies en schenkingen zowel van (vroegere) inwoners van Kozarac in het buitenland, als ook van andere particulieren en instellingen.
De twee doelstellingen van de Stichting worden onder andere verwezenlijkt door:
De steun van de renovatie van infrastructuur in Kozarac en omstreken
-    O.a. met behulp van HIVOS uit Nederland zijn prullenbakken, bankjes en containers aangechaft;
De renovatie van het sportveld te Kozarac (basketbal- en volleybalveld)
Het veld buiten is gerenoveerd: (voormalige) inwoners, de Nederlandse ambassade te Sarajevo, vierdeklassers van het Stedelijk Gymnasium Leiden, Wilde Ganzen, Klavertje Vier, medewerkers van het ministerie van Justitie, Internationale Graanover, e.a. hebben de renovatie mogelijk gemaakt;
De sportzaal wordt thans gerenoveerd; Wilde Ganzen, NCDO, Vierdeklassers van het Stedelijk Gymnasium Leiden en het Bosnische ministerie van onderwijs zijn de belangrijkste donateurs;
De steun aan voetbalvereniging ‘Bratstvo’(Broederschap);
Jaarlijks wordt een (symbolisch) bedrag gedoneerd; ?Š?Šnmalig zijn 4 voetballen geschonken
De steun bij de renovatie van het gebouw van Brandweer te Kozarac en het oprichten van de Brandweer;
In 2006 is een (symbolisch) bedrag geschonken aan de brandweervereniging die in 2006 is opgericht
De steun van de vereniging van de ex-kampgevangenen in Kozarac en hun activiteiten;
In 2005 en 2006 is 350 euro geschonken ten behoeve van de oprichting (registratie, zaal huur) van de vereniging.
De steun van de hulpbehoevende inwoners van Kozarac;
In 2006 is 100 euro geschonken aan Stichting Jetimi die hulp biedt aan weeskinderen in Kozarac en omstreken.
De steun van de internetsite van Kozarac: www.Kozarac.ba
In 2005 en 2006 is in totaal 240 euro geschonken aan de redactie van de site.

Via onze Stichting worden voorts donaties van particulieren aangewend voor verschillende acties en projecten in Kozarac, onder andere voor: de uitgave van het Boek van vermisten van gemeente Prijedor, begraafplaats voor oorlogsslachtoffers, plaatselijke autoriteiten (computers, printers), voetbalveldje in dorp Kamicani, etc. De Stichting is mede verantwoordelijk voor de organisatie van traditionele basketbaltoernooi in Kozarac.
