Wat in 2004 in Nederland begon als een tijdelijk initiatief, is uitgegroeid tot een belangrijke steun aan de gemeenschap van in 1992 verwoest stadje Kozarac in Bosnië Hercegovina.

In 2004 werd door een paar enthousiaste mensen de Stichting Optimisti 2004 opgericht (‘optimisten 2004’). Destijds was het opgezet als een tijdelijke actie om een aantal kleinschalige noodzakelijke ontwikkelingsprojecten in Kozarac op te zetten.

Kozarac was tijdens de Bosnische oorlog door de Servische strijdkrachten al in 1992 volledig verwoest. De stad is al na enkele maanden volledig etnisch gezuiverd en letterlijk van de kaart geveegd. De hele regio, Noord Westen van Bosnië, waar Kozarac ligt, is vooral bekend geworden door de beruchte concentratiekampen: Omarska, Keraterm en Trnopolje, alsmede door de eerste veroordeelde van het Joegoslavië Tribunaal, Dusko Tadic. Ruim 1800 mensen zijn vermist of vermoord.

Sinds 1999 keren de overlevende bewoners langzaam terug naar Kozarac. Echter, doordat de stad volledig verwoest was, zo ook alle infrastructuur en alle faciliteiten, loopt de wederopbouw langzaam. De gemeentelijke autoriteiten, die deels verantwoordelijk zijn voor de misdaden uit 1992, doen ook vandaag de dag geen poging om de terugkerende bevolking te helpen in de meest noodzakelijke behoeftes.

Op 1 augustus om 17.00 uur zal de zaal op een feestelijke manier in Kozarac worden geopend.
